Peaceful Glen Organics Weather

Click for Covelo, California Forecast

What's the weather like in Covelo now? For nearby towns, Ukiah is the closest Yahoo weather station, but you might also try Eureka for current conditions. Although we're only 200 miles from the San Francisco Bay area, our climate zone 7 is dramatically different. Up in Round Valley, on the east or inland side of highway 101, we have four distinct seasons, unlike the areas closer to the moderating influence of the ocean.

We are surrounded by mountains up to 7500' high, while the valley floor is about 1400'. Our last hard frost in 1999 was June 8, but close neighbors reported freezing temps on July 4! Our orchard microclimate dropped to only 39.5 that day. Imagine loosing all your tomato plants to frost in the middle of July! Nine days later, July 13, 1999 we had a high of 105.5. The weather's a bit changeable up here! Here's the latest weather radar outlook for our area.

Thanks to Avatel, Peaceful Glen Organics has an automated weather reporting station up and running, with sensors in the orchard and greenhouse. Daily temperature, humidity and leaf wetness readings are downloaded and used to calculate "degree days" used in integrated pest management and spraying schedules.

weather station graph Here's a sample graph of current temperature and degree days. Since we're an organic orchard, we are limited in what we can spray, and most organic compounds have limited effectiveness and durations. By carefully monitoring the daily climatic conditions, we hope to more accurately forecast when diseases and pests are most likely to appear, and spray only when we actually need to, rather than follow an arbitrary schedule based on past years. Our chief concerns are apple scab and codling moth . Avatel's software has built-in analysis features for codling moth hatching cycles, and an update for apple scab calculations coming this year.
